Chapter 5: Eelgrass

Scroll

More change came in 1930 when a slime mold disease killed almost all the eelgrass plants in the Atlantic Ocean.

Brant Geese lost their food source.

Their populations and migratory routes changed as a result.

Eelgrass partially recovered but the Brant Geese rarely come to Merigomish Harbour now.

Eelgrass was named an ecologically sensitive species in 2009. Today researchers and Mi’kmaw communities across Atlantic Canada are working together to study, map, and replant eelgrass.
